Second step is a violence prevention program created by the Committee for Children out of Seattle Washington. The program is designed to help children learn pro social skills and reduce impulsive and aggressive behavior.
Research indicates that aggressive behavior in children predicts risk of later delinquency, substance abuse, school dropout, early parenthood, and depression. Classroom use of the Second Step program helps provide children with the skills they need to create safe environments and become successful adults.
Child Care Solutions has sponsored a local Second Step program since 2007 funded by the United Way Community Initiative Fund. We provide participating pre-school and after-school program staff with curriculum kits, training in Second Step, and on-site mentoring to help staff integrate Second Step into daily classroom activities.

Goals of the Program:
1. To increase children's ability to: * identify the feelings of others * take others' perspective * respond empathetically to others
2. To decrease impulsive and aggressive behavior in children through: * using calm down techniques * applying problem solving strategies to social situations * practicing positive social skills
3. To decrease angry and aggressive behavior through: * recognizing angry feelings * using anger reduction techniques
There are three components to the pre-school curriculum * Empathy * Impulse control * Problem solving
Second Step is a universal program. It is taught to all students in the classroom. |
